Rescinding Use of "Operations in the Information Environment (OIE)" as a Formal Marine Corps Doctrine Term
This MARADMIN rescinds the use of "Operations in the Information Environment (OIE)" as a formal Marine Corps doctrine term. The Marine Corps will instead conduct information operations through the "information warfighting function" and will only use OIE when referring specifically to the Joint definition. This change is applicable to the entire Marine Corps Total Force.

1. Reference (a) rescinds use of "operations in the information environment (OIE)," as a formal Marine Corps doctrine term. 2. The Marine Corps will not redefine OIE or amplify Joint OIE. Information in Marine Corps operations will be conducted through the information warfighting function and not be bounded by a potentially restrictive version of OIE or its equivalent. 2.a. The Marine Corps acknowledges the JP 3-04 Joint OIE definition. Therefore, using the term OIE in Marine Corps publications, doctrine, policy documents, or briefings should refer specifically to OIE as a Joint term. 2.b. The following "information warfighting function" definition is authorized for use, information - The actions taken to generate, preserve, deny, or project informational power to increase and protect competitive advantage or combat power potential within all domains of the operational environment. Information is one of the seven warfighting functions. 2.c. The seven functions / tasks and six capability areas referenced in reference (b) are under review for possible reformulation and incorporation into future Marine Corps information doctrine. 2.d. Marine Corps Warfighting Publication (MCWP) 8-10, Information in Marine Corps Operations is in development and will supersede reference (a) upon publication. 3.
