2004 Marine Corps Climate Survey (MCCS)

The Marine Corps is conducting the 2004 Marine Corps Climate Survey (MCCS) to measure perceptions of organizational climate, discrimination, and sexual harassment. Approximately 11,000 active duty Marines and 9,000 reservists have been randomly selected to participate beginning in June 2004. Leaders are requested to encourage selected Marines to complete and return the survey promptly to ensure their opinions are reflected in the findings.

1. THE MCCS IS A MARINE CORPS-WIDE SURVEY THAT
MEASURES PERCEPTIONS OF ORGANIZATION AND COMMAND CLIMATE, AS WELL AS
EXPERIENCES OF DISCRIMINATION AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT. THE SURVEY IS
SPONSORED BY THE MANPOWER EQUAL OPPORTUNITY BRANCH, MANPOWER PLANS
AND POLICY DIVISION, MANPOWER AND RESERVE AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT,
HEADQUARTERS U.S. MARINE CORPS. THE SUCCESS OF OUR EFFORTS IN
EVALUATING THESE AREAS DEPENDS ON THE INDIVIDUAL MARINE, REGARDLESS
OF GRADE, RACE/ETHNICITY, OR GENDER. APPROXIMATELY 11,000 ACTIVE
DUTY MARINES AND 9,000 MARINE RESERVISTS HAVE BEEN RANDOMLY SELECTED
TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MCCS AND WILL RECEIVE THE SURVEY BEGINNING IN
JUN 2004. FOR THE DATA TO BE VALID, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THOSE
MARINES WHO RECEIVE THE SURVEY COMPLETE AND RETURN IT.
2. AS THE MARINE CORPS BECOMES INCREASINGLY DIVERSE, THERE IS A
NEED FOR MORE ACCURATE DATA ABOUT EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND RELATED
ISSUES. RESPONSES TO THE MCCS WILL BE ANALYZED FOR DIFFERENCES
AMONG RACIAL/ETHNIC GROUPS, BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE MARINES, AND
BETWEEN OFFICERS AND ENLISTED PERSONNEL. THE RESULTS WILL TELL US
HOW WE ARE DOING, AND ALSO SHED LIGHT ON HOW TO BETTER ADDRESS
LINGERING CONCERNS.
3. LEADERS AT ALL LEVELS ARE REQUESTED TO SUPPORT THIS EFFORT BY
ENCOURAGING THOSE MARINES RANDOMLY SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE TO
COMPLETE THE SURVEY UPON RECEIPT. THE MCCS ADDRESSES IMPORTANT
ISSUES THAT AFFECT ALL MARINES AND THEIR QUICK RESPONSE WILL ENSURE
THEIR OPINIONS ARE REFLECTED IN THE FINDINGS.
