Deadline for Marine Corps Enterprise Network Unclassified Networked Shared Drive Migration to Office 365 SharePoint Online
This MARADMIN establishes a mandatory deadline of 30 September 2025 for all Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN) unclassified networked shared drives to be migrated to Office 365 SharePoint Online (SPO). All content must be transferred and existing networked shared drives decommissioned by this date, as Sharegate licensing and Microsoft technical support for migration will end in 4Q FY25 and will not be funded beyond FY25.
Issued: July 23, 2024
1. Situation. This is a coordinated DCI IC4, PEO Digital MARADMIN to provide stakeholder notification of the 30 September 2025 deadline for unclassified networked shared drive migration to Office 365 SharePoint Online (SPO) discussed in reference (a). This MARADMIN also reiterates references (b) and (c) guidance for networked shared drive migration and resources available to stakeholders between now and the 30 September 2025 deadline to complete migration. 2. Mission. All content currently stored on MCEN unclassified networked shared drives must be transferred to SPO, and all networked shared drives currently hosting such data must be disabled and decommissioned NLT 30 September 2025. Sharegate licensing and the Microsoft technical support required for shared drive migration ends in 4Q, FY25 and will not be funded in FY26 or beyond. 3. Execution. 3.A. Commander's Intent. 3.A.1. Networked shared drive migration of Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN) general purpose unclassified file storage and sharing services from on-premises services to enterprise cloud-based office productivity services enables establishment of a common digital operating environment providing access to standardized computing technologies, interoperable applications, and enabling enduring access to Marine's data throughout their careers. 3.A.2. By transitioning to cloud-based file storage solutions like SharePoint Online (SPO), the U.S. Marine Corps aims to capitalize on its advanced features such as real-time collaboration, enhanced search capabilities, and robust security measures. This shift will streamline our organization's workflow and data management practices, bolster the Marine Corps' cybersecurity posture, enhance compliance with data protection regulations, and facilitate the phasing out of outdated networked drive technology. 3.B. Concept of Operations. 3.B.1. Organizations and individuals who have not scheduled unclassified MCEN general purpose networked personal and organizational shared drive services migration will initiate migration plans and execution to the existing unclassified cloud-based personal and organizational file storage. Guidance for initiating migration process is available at the following site: https://usmc.sharepoint-mil.us/sites/SPO_MCC/SitePages/Shared-Drive- Repository-(SDR)-Getting-Started-Guide.aspx. 3.B.2. PEO Digital Workplace Services (DWS) will report networked shared drive content migration progress on an ongoing basis via Microsoft Power BI dashboard visualization. Commanders / stakeholders can monitor networked shared drive migration progress at the following link: https://app.mil.powerbigov.us/groups/me/ reports/825a6d00-e26a-4981-840d-8549cab55a78/ReportSection?ctid=f4c4 4cda-18c6-46b0-80f2-e290072444fd. 3.B.3. Stakeholders should collaborate with the PEO Digital DWS Team to coordinate their migration efforts. In support of migrations to SPO, the preferred strategy is a content-only migration. This process should be initiated by the command's Information Systems Coordinator (ISC) or Information Knowledge Manager (IKM) and carried out by their designated migrator. This approach assumes that commands have a better understanding of the data to be transferred and their SPO topology, configuration, and permission requirements. It also ensures adherence to enterprise policies on data labeling and optimally integrates with an existing SPO topology and taxonomy, which are crucial for enhancing searchability and discovery in collaborative environments. The PEO Digital DWS Team will work with the G6/S6 offices to ensure that network resources are readily available to troubleshoot any network-related issues that may arise during the migration and to explore other cloud-based storage solutions that may be more suitable depending on the organization's specific requirements or compatibility needs. 3.B.4. The Marine Corps Enterprise Cloud (MCEC) Concierge Team will provide guidance to commands seeking alternative cloud solutions for their applications or databases. To avoid any disruptions to business operations, it is recommended that commands or organizational units collaborate with them as soon as possible to determine if their databases or applications which cannot be migrated to SPO can be hosted in the USMC Enterprise Cloud environment. Website: https://cloud.navy.mil/cloud. 4. Administration and Logistics. 4.A. The PEO Digital DWS Team will provide the migration tools, subject matter experts, and access to its migration support website to assist stakeholders with their effort to migrate to SPO. The M365 Migration Command Center support website offers comprehensive guidelines on preparing content for migration, archiving outdated or irrelevant files, and tools to identify potential issues that might complicate migrations. 4.B. There is also a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section that addresses common questions and concerns that stakeholders may have about the migration process. The website will be updated regularly to provide information on the migration progress, such as changes to the timeline, completed milestones, and any updates to data governance policies affecting shared-drive migrations. 5. Command and Signal. 5.A. The M365 Migration Command Center website is available at: https://usmc.sharepoint-mil.us.mcas-gov.us/sites/SPO_MCC/. 5.B. Questions regarding support for shared drive migration should be directed to the POCs listed in this message. POC at DCI IC4 is Trevor Daniel / Civ/ trevor.daniel@usmc.mil / 571-256-9082. POC at PEO Digital is Sandra Miller / Civilian / Sandra.miller@usmc.mil / 703-784-6447. 5.C. Applicability. This MARADMIN is applicable to the Total Force. Release authorized by LtGen M. G. Glavy, Headquarters Marine Corps, Deputy Commandant for Information.
