2016 Hispanic American Heritage Month 15 Sep – 15 Oct

1.  Hispanic Americans have long played an integral role in the building of our great nation, our collective rich culture and our proud American heritage.  Each year, we observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from 15 September – 15 October.  During this period, we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.  The 15th of September has much significance, as it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries:  Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  The theme for this years Hispanic American Heritage Month is:  "Embracing, Enriching, and Enabling America."<br>
2.  The Hispanic American community has enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community and embraced and enriched the ideals on which our nation was founded.  Through a history of contributions in the arts, sports, public service, research and development, non-profit organization management, civil rights, politics, business, agriculture, and service industry, Hispanic Americans have enriched our communities, our nation, and our world.<br>
3.  Hispanic Americans have long served in the Marine Corps.  Major General Angela Salinas served 32 years in the Marine Corps and among a host of firsts, became the first woman to serve as Commanding General, Western Recruiting Region.  On August 2, 2006, Major General Salinas became the first Hispanic woman to hold the rank of Brigadier General.<br>
4.  During Hispanic American Heritage month, commanders are encouraged to take time to increase awareness and celebrate the dedicated service and contributions of Hispanic Americans to our country and Corps.  Commanders are further encouraged to conduct programs and promote participation in observance events in the local community.<br>
